Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a worldwide study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) which examines the scholastic performance of students in mathematics, science and reading to determine if they have acquired the knowledge and skills essential for participation in a knowledge society.
The study evaluates the quality of a nation’s education system in comparison to the rest of the world. According to recent PISA reports, Malaysia was ranked in the bottom third of countries with a Reading score well below the OECD average.
Malaysia’s participation in PISA has highlighted a need to improve several areas in the education system. As a result, the Education Blueprint has set a target that Malaysia should be in the top one-third in the world for international assessments such as PISA by the year 2025.
To realise this aspiration, the Curriculum Development Division, Ministry of Education has been given the responsibility to plan and execute an initiative to improve Malaysia’s achievement in PISA.
As part of the initiative, Program HEBAT was introduced comprising a resource material for teachers to improve literacy as tested by PISA. HEBAT stands for HAYATI, EKSPLORASI BERFIKIR ARAS TINGGI.
